“So be it”: the Khoper Regiment goes to the Caucasus

On 24 April 1777 Catherine II approved Potemkin’s report on the Azov–Mozdok Line: the Khoper Regiment, “settled… in a needless place”, was ordered “to move there in the coming spring”. On 6 August the regiment left Tsaritsyn and in 25 days crossed 516 versts of the Kalmyk steppe.

The Khoper Cossacks found Stavropol

On 18 October 1777 a detachment was left on a tributary of the Kalaus to build the Aleksandrovskaya (from 1778 Severnaya) fortress, and on 22 October the Khoper Cossacks and the Vladimir Dragoons laid Fortress No. 8 — the future Stavropol. The horseman on the city’s arms stands for its founders, the Khoper Cossacks and the dragoons.
