The family’s first St George Cross

By an order of the Minister of War of 22 June 1859, for actions in the first half of 1858 on the Right Flank of the Caucasus Line, the Insignia of the Military Order, 4th class, was awarded to Stepan Kalaushin, an uryadnik of the 1st Urup Regiment — Stepan Alekseyevich, son of Aleksey Trofimovich. According to the roster, insignia no. 6451 was given for repelling a mountaineers’ raid near Ispravnaya on 17 May 1858.

On 19 October 1859 mountaineers drove off half a herd of cattle at the Psebay fortification; two Khoper sotnias caught them at the crossing of the Malaya Laba and recovered the herd. The Insignia of the Military Order, 4th class, went to Uryadnik Luka Fisenkov and twelve Cossacks, among them “Stepan Kalaushin” — △ most likely Stepan Nikolayevich, son of Nikolay Ivanovich.
