Itinerary of the Shah of Persia's European journey, April 1900 (Vorarlberger Volksblatt)

Caption
Report from St Petersburg, April 1900: the Shah would cross Russia incognito — Vladikavkaz, Kharkov, Warsaw — take the cure at Contrexéville, and on his return the official part of the journey, with a ceremonial reception in St Petersburg, would begin at the frontier station of Wirballen. The visit was thus announced well in advance [Vorarlberger Volksblatt, 25 Apr 1900, p. 3]. According to family testimony, confirmed by relatives and recorded in the family history, Fedot Alekseevich made a saddle for the Shah of Persia in his workshop on the commission of Nicholas II — the work took two months — and took it to St Petersburg himself; the Emperor praised the saddle and congratulated the master on the title of Purveyor to the Court, though the gold watch promised to Fedot never reached him [Roster of A. B. Kalaushin, no. 73]. The dating most consistent with the documents is spring 1900: Fedot served in the Convoy from 1892 and was discharged by Kuban Cossack Host order No. 60 of 17 June 1900, while Mozaffar ad-Din Shah's state visit to St Petersburg (4–10 July 1900, Old Style) was announced in the press as early as April; the two months of work fall in the spring, and the farewell review of departing Convoy Cossacks in early summer. Fedot Kalaushin's title of Purveyor to the Imperial Court is confirmed by the official list of purveyors of early 1915 [Zimin et al. 2013, after RGIA, f. 472]. Where to look for documents on the saddle itself: RGIA, f. 468 (His Majesty's Cabinet, gifts to the Shah in 1900), f. 516 (chamber-fourier journal for 1900), f. 472 (file on the purveyor title).
