Nicholas II arrives in Vienna, 27 August 1896: the Convoy's "Circassians" (Pester Lloyd)
◆ documented

Caption
Nicholas II arrives in Vienna on 27 August 1896: "five 'Circassians' in scarlet uniforms jump out of a carriage and hurry to the saloon car of the Russian Majesties, where they take post". The "Circassians" were Cossacks of the Kuban sotnias of His Imperial Majesty's Own Convoy, in one of which Fedot Alekseevich served; whether he was on this journey is not known. According to family testimony, confirmed by relatives and recorded in the family history, Matvei Alekseevich, together with Fedot Alekseevich, carried out a commission for Archduke Franz Ferdinand — full parade harness, saddles, sabres and kinjals — "a political order intended to improve relations with Austria-Hungary" [Roster of A. B. Kalaushin, no. 71]. [Pester Lloyd, 27 Aug 1896, p. 11].
