"Archduke Franz Ferdinand leaves on the 6th for St Petersburg to present himself to Emperor Nicholas II in his new capacity as a Russian General of Cavalry" (February 1902) — the Archduke's visit to Russia under Nicholas II. According to family testimony, confirmed by relatives and recorded in the family history, Matvei Alekseevich, together with Fedot Alekseevich, carried out a commission for Archduke Franz Ferdinand — full parade harness, saddles, sabres and kinjals — "a political order intended to improve relations with Austria-Hungary" [Roster of A. B. Kalaushin, no. 71]. Where to look for documents on the gift: the 1915 inventory of the Konopiště arms collection (HHStA) and Franz Ferdinand's archive, boxes "Ehrenpreise und Geschenke", 1892–1914 [Sport und Salon, 1 Feb 1902, p. 3].
