The deed of 1902 and “Annushka the Circassian”

◇ family testimony

In the deed of 1902 for a house and garden in Batalpashinskaya, Aleksey Nikolayevich stipulated that “until my death and the death of my wife Anna Nikitichna, I and my wife shall own and enjoy all this property”. The family called his wife Annushka the Circassian: Boris Matveyevich, from his father’s words, told how brothers travelling for Damascus steel carried her off from a well in a Circassian aul; Yevdokiya Fyodorovna said she was the daughter of a Gypsy named Belavin; the compiler of the roster believed her to be Adyghe.
