“They returned only a sewing machine and an empty chest”
◇ family testimony
In the Bekeshevskaya branch the 1930s were remembered for dekulakisation: the family of Roman Vasilyevich, who managed an alabaster works in the aul of Kubina, was “dekulakised, de-Cossackised, stripped of everything that could be taken”. The mother obtained a paper saying that the dekulakisation had been wrong, but “they returned only a sewing machine and an empty chest”. In 1935 Roman Vasilyevich fled to Sulimov — as Batalpashinsk was called in 1934–1937 — and rejoined his family.
